The contemplative attitude of the oarsman who has momentarily stopped to admire the view mirrors the spectator's own thoughtful act of looking. This meditative mood finds a physical counterpart in the soft, smoky tonalities of the evening sky and the gentle waves of the swelling river. The moods of figures, audience, and nature reflect endlessly upon one another like a series of facing mirrors.
