The courtesan on the left, wearing a spectacular kimono with butterflies and stripes, observes two Western women playing viola and flute in the center of the room. A Chinese manservant and a Japanese female attendant serve wine, grapes, and sweets. In the background, ships can be seen through the Western-style paned windows, indicating that the soiree takes place in the new port-city of Yokohama.
