Evening headscarf
Designer Elsa Schiaparelli Italian
Not on view
Based on the lappet, a nineteenth century form of headwear, this scarf, instead of being made of lace like its nineteenth century inspiration, is made of crisp organza and decorated with fanciful charms, including flower baskets, birds, and leaves, an example of Schiaparelli's jewelry aesthetic. Collections from Schiaparelli produced during this time incorporated many natural elements such as butterflies, birds, and various forms of flora and fauna. Throughout her career, she offered veils and scarf-life headpieces in addition to the more accepted hats, an example of her tendency to veer from the conventional sense of fashion and experiment with artistic alternatives.
