Barbara de Braganza
Not on view
Artists rarely produced portrait ivories in the Philippines. This exceptional pair of reliefs depicts the future King Fernando VI of Spain and the Portuguese princess he married in 1729. News of the royal wedding, along with portraits of the couple, reached Manila in July of that year with the arrival of the galleon from New Spain. These miniature carvings precisely replicate portraits made by the Spanish court painter, Jean Ranc, to commemorate the marriage.
