Allegorical figures in the foreground are shown here before a representation of Admiral Rodney's naval battle with the Count De Grasse. The historian Rapin stated in the related text that the triumph of the American general Washington and French general Rochambeau over the British demonstrated the injustice and uncertainty of war. In the image, rays of Providence shine over Rodney's fleet, promising future peace and plenty to Britannia, while Fame and Commerce praise her.
