Fragment of an Ornamented Band

Not on view

The leaf-shaped medallions and palmettes on this colorful band continued to be used in the post-Byzantine period in Egypt and recall the more naturalistic vegetal forms seen on earlier textiles. Orange borders studded with colorful gems create the illusion of a band. The stylized forms and bright hues of this fragment suggest a date early in the Islamic period. It is probably a band (clavus) from a tunic, the standard dress in the Mediterranean world.
