Prayer Bead with the Man of Sorrows
Not on view
This prayer bead has lost the carving that would have been set in the upper half of the shell, allowing an insider’s look at the refined openwork carving of the exterior.
The lower scene portrays Jesus surrounded by the tools and people linked to the torture he endured just before the Crucifixion. The inscription at the top suggests that it was originally paired with an image of the mourning Virgin. On the exterior, another inscription advises the user of this bead that good deeds are repaid sevenfold.
