Family Tree of the Stuarts of Allentown and the Denhams of Edinburgh

Matthias Buchinger German

Not on view

By the winter of 1727, Buchinger was based in Scotland, largely in Edinburgh. His time in Edinburgh was punctuated by important commissions and significant relationships, such as with an agent for the Bank of Scotland, David Spence. This is the largest and most elaborate of Buchinger’s family trees and attests to his relationship with the Stewarts of Alenton and the Denham family, linked by the marriage of Thomas and Susanna (March 14, 1677). This large-scale drawing tells of not only the great union of these two families but also the histories of their ancestors. In the sturdy trunk of the Stewarts’ tree, the account of the origins of the family appears to have been rewritten in a different (lighter and less sure) hand.
