Virgin of Sorrows (La Virgen de los Dolores)

Attributed to Nicolás Enríquez Mexican

Not on view

This painting of Our Lady of Sorrows epitomizes the genre of statue painting in New Spain and may have been commissioned to replicate a famous dressed sculpture venerated in the Oratorio de San Felipe in Mexico City. The anguished Virgin, her heart pierced by a sword, is surrounded by cherubs holding symbols of Christ’s Passion, to which the crimson color of her dress likewise alludes. The tears trickling down her face help humanize her sorrow and establish a more intimate connection with the viewer.
