Cartouche Designs after Bernardo Castello

Bernardo Castello Italian
Artist and publisher Camillo Cungi Italian
Publisher Giovanni Battista de' Rossi Italian

Not on view

Collection of cartouche designs by Bernardo Castello, engraved and (some) published by Camillo Congo in Rome. The name of Giovanni Battista de' Rossi appears on only one sheet. Several of the cartouche designs are presented on a blank ground, while others are combined with horizontal hatchings. This difference, in combination with different versions of the artists' signatures and slightly different sizes of the plates, suggests that the prints derive from more than one series. Congio is first documented as engraving plates after Castello's designs for "Gerusalemme Liberata", which were issued in Genoa in 1617. A series of coats of arms (targhe), likely referring to (some of) these cartouche designs, was published around 1620.
