Herkomer succeeded John Ruskin as Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford University, holding the position for nine years from 1885. This illustrated publication was based on a series of lectures that he delivered in that capacity devoted to printmaking, an unusual subject for these influential lectures. The artist excelled at several print techniques and even invented a medium, named Herkomergravure, which allowed multiple impressions to be made from a monotype. The etched frontispiece of this publication depicts an etcher at work at a table conjuring images from his imagination.
