Inscription: Colophon, inscribed on painting by Wêng Ling [Zhouru], famous for calligraphy in small size model script, act. mid-17th century, (upper right): The home is provided with good fields and spacious houses, back towards the mountain, neighboring the river, ringed by a pond and a stream with trees and bamboo all around. Fruits and vegetables planted in front, a threshing court in the rear. Boats and carriages to relieve the hardships of walking; walking is for the relaxation of the limbs. There are savory foods for the parents, but never hard work for wife and sons. When good friends arrive en masse, spread out old wines and delicacies; on auspicious occasions and holidays, sacrifice a hog or a lamb. Wander in the luxuriant fields; play in the woods of the plain. Bathing in clear water, chasing the cool breeze, hooking swimming carps, shooting flying geese; enjoy the wind under the dancing clouds. Sing in the high hall, the song of retreat! Rest the mind in the boudoir, thinking about the mysticism of Laozi; breathing the essence of peace and harmony, seeking to become a sage. Daily discussions with wise men about Tao, books and manners of deportment; also, the order and confusion of man. Play the elegant music of the South and the wonderful old tunes. Living between Heaven and Earth, above the world; taking no responsibility for the present; forever preserving the hope of life. Thus, above the clouds, the Milky Way, out of the Universe! Why should there be admiration for those in the courts of emperors and kings? [Trans. by vendor].
