C. J. Nieuwenhuys. A Review of the Lives and Works of Some of the Most Eminent Painters: With Remarks on the Opinions and Statements of Former Writers. London, 1834, pp. 254–55, no. 61, states that in 1803 it was in the collection of M. F. Pauwels in Brussels, and in 1827 in that of De Heer Gerrit Muller, in Amsterdam, where he purchased it for fl. 6,476; gives its present location as the collection of Captain Harcourt.
John Smith. A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of the Most Eminent Dutch, Flemish, and French Painters. 6, London, 1835, pp. 354–55, no. 125, as sold for 3,313 florins at the Pauwels sale of 1803, for 6,025 florins at the Muller sale of 1827, and as bought in for 710 gns. at the Nieuwenhuys sale of 1833.
J[ohannes]. Immerzeel Jr. De levens en werken der Hollandsche en Vlaamsche kunstschilders, beeldhouwers, graveurs en bouwmeesters. 3, Amsterdam, 1843, p. 161, records a "kapitaal stuk" sold for fl. 6,025 in the Muller sale of 1827 and now owned by Captain Harcourt in London, possibly this picture.
George Redford. "Mr. Foster's Clewer Manor Collection." Times (June 5, 1876), p. 12 [reprinted in George Redford, "Art Sales," London, 1888, vol. 1, p. 247], states that "this very fine example was received with applause and put up at 500 guineas, falling at the price of £2,367.10s".

M. S. Robinson. Van de Velde: A Catalogue of the Paintings of the Elder and the Younger Willem van de Velde. Greenwich, 1990, vol. 1, pp. 416–18, no. 29, ill., as "A Kaag Alongside a Groyne with Other Shipping Near the Shore," and as "painted probably entirely by [Willem van de Velde] the Younger for the Van de Velde studio"; dates it about 1665; on the basis of "old chalk marks on the middle vertical stretcher: June 3 / 76," seen in 1975, links it with the Clewer Manor sale; states that this is confirmed by a note in Smith's copy of his catalogue, which reads "Now in the Coll. of Edmd Foster Esqr"; gives further inconclusive provenance information.
