Arch with Running Vines, Leaves, and Fruit

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 300

This remarkably well-preserved arch may once have been set over a doorway at the Monastery of Apa Apollo in Bawit, Egypt. Pomegranates and other fruits grow from a vine rising from a decorated amphora, or vase, on each side of the arch.
