Head ornaments such as this example would have been worn by Kabyle women in Algeria as a diadem, wrapped around the forehead, the pendants falling at the level of the eyebrow. Red coral was a favorite gemstone of this and other Amazigh (Berber) groups, though imitation gems in glass or plastic were common substitutes.
