Portrait of Séverine

Auguste Renoir French

Not on view

Caroline Rémy, known by her pen name “Séverine,” was one of the first French women journalists and a passionate feminist and left-wing orator. Renoir drew her likeness on several occasions, here in charcoal over pastel and again in a pastel (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.).
