Venetian Scene

Joseph Lindon Smith American

Not on view

Smith was a member of the Harvard-Boston Expedition at Giza in Egypt for much of his career, recording excavated finds on the spot in watercolor. Seeing his mission in life as preserver of the great monuments of the ancient world, he worked in many places, including Asia and Central America. Smith’s enthusiasm for describing architectural details is evident in this precisely rendered view of the Palazzo Dario on the Grand Canal in Venice.
