Shadows in Lake

Alfred Stieglitz American

Not on view

Stieglitz regularly spent summers at Oaklawn, his family’s country home on Lake George, in upstate New York. In the photographs he made there about 1916, his work took a turn toward the spontaneity and lighthearted wit of the casual snapshot. Here, in a refined version of a trick popular among amateur snapshooters, Stieglitz used a handheld Graflex camera to capture his own shadow (on the right) alongside that of his friend the painter Abraham Walkowitz (on the left), stretching across the shallow waters of Lake George.
