Villa in the Oriental Style (elevation and plans)

Not on view

This architectural design was published in Davis's "Rural Residences" in 1838. Its "East Indian" character derives from the overhanging veranda, ogee-arched window lintels, and Chinese-inspired eave ornaments, all of whic are applied to a simplified Palladian villa plan. The exoticism is echoed in the garden by the decorative parasol shading a circular garden bench in the right foreground; the distant Gothic castle is a witty allusion to the style Davis's patrons usually preferred for their Hudson River estates.
