Thomas Anshutz was Sloan's teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The scene depicted shows Anshutz delivering a lecture on anatomy to Robert Henri's students at the New York School of Art in 1905. Pictured in the audience are Walter Pach, William Glackens, Maurice Prendergast, George Bellows, Robert Henri and his wife Linda, and Sloan and his wife Dolly, see: Morse 1969, p. 179–80.
