Isaac L. Rice, Esq.

John Sloan American

Not on view

Note at bottom inscribed by Sloan says: 'one of five proofs plate destroyed J.S.' This is an error and likely refers to the plate for 'The Rice Gambit'. The plate for 'Isaac L. Rice, Esq.' is with the John Sloan Trust.

Isaac Rice was known among chess players as the inventor of the Rice Gambit. Rice's wife commissioned this portrait, which was compiled from various photographic sources, see: Morse 1969, p. 205.
