Le Gladiateur

After Michel Monier French
Engraver Simon Thomassin French

Not on view

This French print reproduces the famous ancient marble known as The Borghese Gladiator (formerly in the Borghese Gallery at Rome, now at the Louvre). A replica in bronze by Hubert Le Sueur, with sword and shield added, still stands at Houghton at the base of William Kent's Great Staircase, offering a dramatic focal point. Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford received the sculpture as a gift from the 8th Earl of Pembroke, who previously showed it at Wilton House, near Winchester.
