This caricatured stage performance refers to the surrender of the burghers of Amsterdam on October 10, 1787 to the Stadtholder Prince William V. Monarchs in the audience include Louis XVI, George III, Catherine of Russia, the Sultan of Turkey and Emperor Joseph II. Frogs represent the patriotic burghers. During the uprising, the Princess of Orange had attempted to reach the Hague and was treated badly by the Patriots, leading her brother Frederick William II of Prussia to send military help.
