The London-based quarterly periodical ''Westminster Review'' began its publication in January 1824, and continued for almost a century until 1914. It merged with another publication and, for a few years in the 1830s, was known as the ''London and Westminster Review.'' Cole's pioneering article on contemporary wood-engraving outlined its wide reach which made the ''spirit and genius of a great artist [now] accessible to the thousands, or the millions, by embodying them in inexpensive and portable forms.'' The author later became an administrator and was the founding director in 1857 of the South Kensington Museum, London (later the Victoria and Albert Museum).
