This painting bears a signature of Ma Xingzu, a member of the Imperial Painting Academy under Emperor Gaozong (r. 1127–62), first emperor of the Southern Song. Ma was the second painter from his famed artistic family to serve at the Song court. His father, Ma Fen, was in the Painting Academy of Emperor Huizong (reigned 1101–25), while his son Ma Shirong, his grandson Ma Yuan, and his great-grandson Ma Lin all served as artists at the Southern Song court (1127–1279).
