The composition of this drawing, depicting a group of standing soldiers, exists in several other versions by different hands, which may all derive from a lost original prototype. Similar figures are found in works by Pinturicchio and Perugino and may have been stock types that circulated in the studios of Umbrian artists, which were adapted for various types of subjects.
