The artist probably drew this sketch of a seated man holding a book, portrayed in a rather natural pose, from a live model—perhaps using another artist or studio assistant, as was common in Florentine workshops at the time. The drawing was likely produced by a pupil of Baccio Bandinelli, a sculptor for the Medici family, whose numerous drawings are frequently confused with those of his followers.
