Pax with the Virgin and Child

Italian, Ferrara

Not on view

This pax portrays the Virgin and Child surrounded by four angels and eleven amorini holding garlands in an all’antica architectural structure. Many versions are known, including those in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Diocesan Museum, Pienza [mounted as a pax]). It has been ascribed to a Ferrarese artist, influenced by Cosmè Tura, as well as to the schools of Padua and Siena. This aftercast has some loss of detail and traces of wear.
