Scarab Inscribed with Royal Title and Blessing Related to Amun-Re

New Kingdom or later

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 130

The inscription on the base of this scarab mentions that the pharaoh is beloved by the sun god Amun-Re. The upper part shows a bee and the sedge plant, forming together the royal title ‘he of the bee and the sedge plant’ and referring to the pharaoh as ruler of a unified kingdom: the bee refers to Upper Egypt and the marsh plant to Lower Egypt. The hieroglyphs below specify that the king is loved by the sun god Amun-Re.
