This wood engraving centers on an elderly man seated in a chair next to table holding a book and his as a cat rubs his leg. The image illustrates "Vesper," a poem written the Countess de Gasparin. Born in Geneva, the countess addressed subjects ranging from religion to social issues such as freedom, equality and artistic expression and was read widely in Britain and the United States.
