Not on view

An injured stag lies on a rock as two deer lick his wounded back and others watch, with three grouse in the foreground at right. Based on a picture shown at the Royal Academy in 1856. The subject derives from an incident that resulted when Landseer fired a random shot to empty his barrel after a day of deer stalking, and unknowingly wounded a stag. At midnight the keeper called the artist and to witness the moonlit scene shown here.
