Landseer shows a small dog sitting up on its hind legs and holding a small pan in its mouth. The absent owner's poverty is suggested both by the animal's action and various objects, including an upturned straw hat, cane and basket containing bundles and a rabbit skin. This etching comes from a set of seventeen that E. Gambart & Co. initially published in the 1820s then reissued in 1848. Born in Belgium, Ernest Gambart moved to Paris and then London. He soon established his own publishing house and dealership, developing fruitful relationships with many leading artists of the Victorian era and became a British citizen in 1846.
