Not on view

Near the arched entrance to a stone stairway, a woman on horseback holds a small girl on her lap. As a boy holds the horse's head, a man stands ready to help her dismount as three dogs cluster by the horse's legs. The group portrays Lord Francis Egerton (afterwards the Earl of Ellesmere) with his family and Landseer's related painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1837 (a larger composition that included additional figures at left and large arched entrance gate at center).
