Drawing for a theatrical costume for 'At Home Abroad'

Vincente Minnelli American

Not on view

Drawing, design for a man's costume, part of a group of 88 costume designs by Vincente Minnelli. The costume consists of a white and blue striped top, a red handkerchief tied around the neck, and an ankle-length, wide, white pants, worn over white socks and black espadrilles. The figure represented wearing the dress has dark skin and carries a large bundle of fruits (lemons?), wrapped on red cloth. According to comments made by Vincente Minnelli in 1978, this was designed for Ethel Waters in 'At Home Abroad,' a production for the Shulmans that was directed by Minnelli and Thomas Mitchell in 1935.
