Wilton album, folio 64a: Saint Jerome in the Wilderness Reading

Jusepe de Ribera (called Lo Spagnoletto) Spanish

Not on view

On folio 64 with one other print: 27.78.1(210)
For more information on the Wilton album see entry for 27.78.1(1-428)
The composition of this print is loosely related to Caravaggio's painting of Saint Jerome in the Galleria Borghese, Rome. Brown argues that the monogram etched in the top left corner was not written by Ribera, who, he claims, invariably spelled his name with a J, not a G. It is not known when or by whom the monogram was added, and there are no states without the monogram. Another print attributed to Ribera but rejected by Brown is signed 'GR' in reverse in its second state (see 27.78.1(210) )
