Design for a Brooch with Diamonds, Pearls, and Engraved Floral Motifs

Félix Leblanc French

Not on view

Wood engraving with a design for a brooch with diamonds, pearls, and engraved floral motifs. The design is made up of a ribbon bow motif with a round pearl in the center, from which hangs the body of the brooch, made up of a large, round pearl, flanked above by four scrolling motifs and below by a strip of metal that interlaces to form a square-edged knot, ending on scrolling motifs, and decorated by a lozenge in the center. Under the lozenge is a large, round metallic sphere, from which hangs a smaller, round diamond, and a larger, round pearl. From the scrolls formed to the sides of the lozenge hang two smaller round pearls. The square-edged scrolls are flanked to the sides by two spheres each, the lower ones holding a garland of metallic scales with tiny incised floral motif, which frames the pearls hanging from the interlacing motifs. From under it hangs an oval pearl, separated from the garland by a pair of small leaves with tiny incised floral motifs. The ribbon bow, upper scrolling motifs, and the knot, are all decorated with tiny floral motifs that would have been incised on the metal.
