Not on view

Hand-colored engraving with design for the costume of an Incroyable, part of the book "Incroyables et Merveilleuses," with 33 male and female costume plates designed by Horace Vernet and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, published ca. 1815 in Paris. The costume in this plate consists of a black bateau (boat) top hat, with wide brim tilted front and back, a light brown, double-breasted redingote with ragged tails, 10 buttons lined in pairs in the front, and two pockets, each decorated with one button, tight-fitting, white breeches, decorated at the knees with thin, dangling ribbons, and brown and black riding boots. A white scarf envelops the neck to form a bow under the chin, light green gloves cover the hands, and a striped, red and white belt with a hanging brooch, executed with yellow, red, and white, can be devised under the coat. The outfit is topped by a magnifying glass and a thin, long, knotty cudgel.
