Not on view

Hand-colored engraving with design for the costume of an Incroyable, part of the book "Incroyables et Merveilleuses," with 33 male and female costume plates designed by Horace Vernet and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, published ca. 1815 in Paris. The costume in this plate consists of a dark blue double-breasted redingote with ragged tails and black collar, worn open over a double-breasted vest with horizontal red and yellow stripes, and tight-fitting, gray breeches, a black Robinson hat, and black boots with tassels under the knee. A white scarf envelops the neck, and is tied at the front to form a knot under the chin. The hands are covered by cream gloves, one of them holding a knotty wooden cudgel. The hair is worn short, with the natural waves hanging under the hat, like that of a child.
