Not on view

Hand-colored engraving with design for the costume of an Incroyable, part of the book "Incroyables et Merveilleuses," with 33 male and female costume plates designed by Horace Vernet and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, published ca. 1815 in Paris. The costume in this plate consists of a black "bateau" top hat, a double-breasted gray coat with wide sleeves, worn open over a pastel yellow vest with thin, horizontal, bluish-gray stripes, partially unbuttoned to reveal a white, ruffled shirt, with thin, vertical, blue stripes, cream breeches, light brown leggings, and black shoes. An ample, white scarf envelops the neck, tied to form a small bow under the chin. A small, golden fruit-shaped pin decorates the ruffled collar of the skirt, and a matching golden chain with a brooch hangs under the vest at the waist level. Green gloves and a matching green umbrella complete the outfit. A telescope peeks out of one of the pockets.
