Hand-colored engraving with design for the costume of a Merveilleuse, part of the book "Incroyables et Merveilleuses," with 33 costume plates designed by Horace Vernet and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, published ca. 1815 in Paris. The costume in this plate consists of a black hat with a large, black bow, tied around the chin with a black ribbon, and with large, white feathers, and an ankle-lenght, empire dress with long puffed, scrolling sleeves with thin ribbons tied to form bows around the wrists, puffed layers over the bust and a slightly A-shaped skirt, white gloves, white hose with thin, gray stripes, and pointed white flats with ankle straps.
