San Frediano in Cestello, Florence

Sir Muirhead Bone was a Scottish printmaker and watercolor artist noted for his depictions of architectural and industrial subjects, city views, landscapes, and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. This print presents a view across the River Arno to a domed church with an unadorned facade flanked by low buildings. The Baroque-style church is San Frediano in Cestello in the Oltrarno section of Florence; the name cestello derives from the Cistercians who occupied the church in 1628. Bone also captured some of the boating activity along the river, including two men digging on the riverbank in the foreground. A drawing related to this print is in the collection of the British Museum, London; the view in this print is in reverse from this drawing (which represents how the site looked when Bone sketched it).
