The Virtues: Temperance

Etienne Delaune French

Not on view

Engraving, part of a series of oval prints with two theological virtues and the four cardinal virtues, represented by women standing on landscapes, created by Étienne Delaune possibly around 1576. This print represents Temperance, wearing a draped dress with her chest uncovered, on a three-quarter back view, lifting an ewer above her shoulder with her right arm, and pouring water on a goblet that she holds on her left arm. In the background is a military camp, with tents and soldiers, dressed with helmets and cuirasses, scattered around.
