Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the German-born princess who married George III in 1761, is portrayed here in profile. She wears a tiara, chandelier earring, three jewelled chokers and a necklace adorned with a large suspended diamond. A bow at the nape of the neck secures the necklaces worn with a low-necked brocaded gown decorated with lace and additional jewels, with an ermine cloak around the shoulders. This portrait was created soon after the royal couple married and proved so popular that it was reissued many times by different artists and publishers. This example identifies no designer or engraver, but gives the publisher as John Bowles.
