Vase

Louis C. Tiffany American
Manufacturer Tiffany Furnaces American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774

This vase is a tour de force technically. A complexly layered structure yields this highly decorative vessel with changing color effects when seen under different lighting conditions. Essentially, it is built up layer by layer with subsequent parisons of glass on the blowpipe, some of the layers of which are then given additional treatment, such as iridizing the surface prior to another layer, as well as executing trailed and applied decoration in the form of leaves and stems, sandwiched between layers of glass. The result is a highly compelling artistic vase with an almost abstract design and distinctive coloristic properties. The inscription on the underside of the vase ("3 A-coll.") indicates that it was originally in Tiffany’s personal collection.
