Two Orioles

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 693

Indian artists were keen observers of birds, in keeping with the scientific character of the European natural studies that were reaching the Mughal court in the seventeenth century. The upper bird is a male Indian golden oriole (Oriolus kundoo) and the lower one is a male black-hooded oriole (Oriolus xanthornus). Harmoniously composed in diagonal symmetry, they appear alive and energetic but also lyrically decorative.
