Not on view

This bird's-eye view with title in a banderole at the top of the image represents a complex of buildings in Smithfield, London (now Islington). The Charterhouse was founded as a Carthusian priory in 1371 and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1537. The site was largely rebuilt in the 1540s into a courtyard style house. When Thomas Sutton made a substantial endowment in 1611, the buildings were adapted to serve as an almshouse (retirement home for male pensioners) and a school. That is what is depicted here. The almshouse still occupies the site. The school moved to Godalming, Surrey in 1872.
