"Unsigned Margaret Armstrong binding design of gold stylized wild flowers on red morocco leather grained flexible cloth boards with orange pigmented edges. Includes 500 illustrations in black and white and 48 color illustrations by Miss Armstrong. Conceived, researched, written (Thornber acted as a consulting author) and illustrated by Miss Armstrong, The Field Book of Western Wild Flowers was the first field guide to describe the wildflowers of the states west of the Rocky Mountains, and includes new species Miss Armstrong identified while conducting the extensive research required for the text and illustrations. Miss Armstrong's historic journey with several friends as the first white women to make the descent to the bottom of the Grand Canyon was made with the research for this book as a primary goal. The present copy is one of the earliest printings as it lists The Knickerbocker Press below C.P. Putnam's Son's on the title page, and has the Knickerbocker Press colophon on the verso of the title page (see TBR 10:5); these two points were removed in later printings. Exceptionally scarce in either the smooth flexible boards or in the present faux leather. GE10." -- Austin Abbey Rare Books
