Not on view

Two rows of men ride mounts that echo their identities or professions. An alderman rides a turtle, a sailor rides an anchor, a Jew rides a bag of old clothes, a doctor rides a medicine bottle, an Irishman rides a bull, John Bull rides a beef roast, a Welshman rides a goat and a dandy rides al hobby (a foot-propelled bicycle). The imagery of hobby-horses was often used by British satirists to embody the character or pursuits of a subject.
