Battista Franco Italian
Possibly Marco Angolo del Moro Italian
Former Attribution Monogrammist 9 Italian

Not on view

The print depicts the Adoration of the Magi, one of whom kneels before the Virgin and Child, Joseph stands at the right. At lower right are the engraved initials ‘MV’ that have been identified as belonging to Marco del Moro (Marco Veronese). The print seems to be the result of the collaboration between Franco who was an etcher and possibly Moro who was an engraver. It was Franco’s practice to etch a composition then have the shading added by an engraver. In this print, only the tree at right is etched, the remainder of the composition is engraved. A large and striking composition, it combines a powerful sense of narrative and an intricate architectural background.
