This trade card for Joseph Sympson, a London printseller who worked from The Dove, Russell Court, Drury Lane, places identifying text on a large rock. The latter supports a bearded man who models for an artist seated on the ground at left. The image derives from a chiaroscuro woodcut that Frederick Bloemaert created as a title page for Abraham Bloemaert's "Het .Tekenboek" (The Drawing Book), first published ca. 1650-55.
